Even before graduating, he showed great artistic talent by winningawards, and one of his artworks was selected for the 1990 Young ContemporaryArtists Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.
After graduation, Yap became a full-time artist, focusing on Western oil and acrylic paintings. He was influenced by Malaysian contemporary artist Goh Ah Ang, who iswell known for his detailed Chinese brush paintings of tiny insects, especially ants.
Yap is best known for his acrylic paintings featuring Peranakan porcelain, alsoknown as Nyonya ware or Straits Chinese porcelain. This unique style of porcelain is found only in Southeast Asia. Inspired by its beauty and cultural significance, he combines traditional porcelain designs with modern colours and brushstrokes, creating artworks that evoke a sense of nostalgia.
